Round Two of Project: PopUp will be Here Soon

With a successful first round of Project: PopUp in the Chattanooga history books, River City Company is gearing up for the next round, Project: PopUp 2.0. Similar to the original, Project: PopUp 2.0 aims to assist in meeting River City Company’s goal of creating critical retail mass downtown and assist retailers with the financial, creative and educational obstacles associated with starting a retail storefront.

A new addition to the Project: PopUp curriculum is the inclusion of a retail intensive nine week SpringBoard class starting September. SpringBoard is a collaborative business launching process for entrepreneurs hosted and facilitated by The Company Lab (CO.LAB). This retail inspired addition is a requirement for all first time business owners interested in applying for Project: PopUp 2.0.  Costs for the class are based on a sliding scale dependent on income.

SpringBoard has been a catalyst for the launch of hundreds of new businesses across the region over the past few years. With our city having some of the most affordable office space in the country, the retail focus of Project: PopUp and the coming SpringBoard group is a timely opportunity to launch a storefront with access to some of the best business support resources in Chattanooga.

Retail is a critical component to downtown and enlivens our streets with animation and creativity. Whether it is entrepreneurs taking a chance on a new business venture or an established retailer looking to do a different concept store, Project: PopUp provides the means to do so in the heart of City Center.

At the completion of the SpringBoard program, participants will have approximately a month to submit applications for the Project: PopUp 2.0 program. Although the timeline and location for this program are yet to be announced, the stores’ openings are expected to occur in the late spring to early summer.

About Project: PopUp

Project: PopUp is Downtown Chattanooga’s retail incubator. Designed to support and attract new retail opportunities, the original Project: PopUp was held at the Shoppes at CitiPark in 2012 - early 2013 with five participants on the 800 block of Chestnut Street. For participants, River City Company provides the rent overhead, a facade grant, animation and creative marketing for the program duration as well as mentors and professional development classes. Participants are chosen by a panel of local successful businessmen and women. Project: PopUp's mission is to allow tenants with a great idea to test out their concept rent free for six months with the goal of signing a long term lease at the program’s end.
