The city is served by the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA). CARTA operates 17 bus routes, including Free Electric Shuttles in the downtown area which run continually until 11pm along Broad Street from the Chattanooga Choo-Choo on the south side to Coolidge and Renaissance Parks and the trendy Frazier Avenue shopping area on the north shore. Free wireless Internet is also available on certain "smart buses." You can park and ride CARTA’s Free Electric Shuttles in parking garages on Frazier Avenue on the Northshore and at the Chattanooga Choo Choo on the Southside. The Downtown Electric Shuttle is the easiest way to get around Downtown Chattanooga and - it's a FREE ride! Electric shuttles run daily* about every 5 minutes from the Chattanooga Choo Choo to the Tennessee Aquarium with stops every block in between. The shuttle provides front-door transportation to attractions, convention center, shopping, hotels & employment sites in the Downtown area. All Shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible.

The City of Chattanooga’s Bike Chattanooga Bicycle Transit System will offer a convenient and healthy way for residents and visitors to travel around downtown Chattanooga. Managed by Alta Bicycle Share, the membership driven system will eventually feature 30 stations and 300 bicycles, available to members 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Regular membership will cost $75 per year or $6 for 24 hours. Members will be able to take an unlimited rides of one hour or less within any membership period at no additional charge.

Currently there are two stations open for use - located at 1400 Market St., in front of the Choo-Choo Hotel and at corner of 1st St. and Walnut St. on the south end of the Walnut St. Bridge. The remaining stations are expected to open in Spring, 2012.
